ABOUT BMW KEYS
- All BMW cars manufactured after 1995 are equipped with an anti-theft system. It prevents the engine from starting unless the immobiliser control unit recognises a properly programmed transponder within the car key
- This means those BMWs are protected from being started with just a simple mechanical copy of their car keys
- BMW uses different types of transponder chips, while BMW key fobs have gone through several changes over the years (see below)
- Having an existing BMW key duplicated and programmed will save a great deal of time and money should anything happen to the original
- Getting a replacement BMW key from a dealership is definitely expensive and can also be very time-consuming. That’s because they need to order replacement keys that match your BMW’s chassis number – and delivery can take several days
- Then there’s the inconvenience of actually getting your car to the dealership in the first place if you no longer have any working keys
- BMW E Series remote keys are unserviceable, meaning it’s impossible to open them or replace the battery inside
- BMW F and G Series use keyless technology, but the remote units contain replaceable batteries
- All BMW remote keys contain an emergency blade which can unlock the vehicle if the electrical fob doesn’t work. It slides out from the fob at the press of its release button
- BMW keys that have been programmed for one car can’t be reprogrammed for use on another
OUR BMW KEY SERVICES
LOST OR BROKEN BMW KEY REPLACEMENT
Lost or broken your BMW key? No need to arrange to get your car to a dealership, and no need to wait for days before that dealership receives your replacement key. As soon as you need a new key, just call us and we’ll be there to hand over your new key in as little as just one hour.
SPARE BMW KEYS
No matter why you’ve only got one BMW key, it makes perfect sense to have a duplicate made, and we can do that while you wait. And when you consider what would have to happen if you couldn’t use that single key and you don’t have a duplicate, you’ll know that getting a spare makes sense.
BMW KEY PROGRAMMING
All BMW models manufactured since 1995 have keys with transponder chips and remote controls – both of which will require programming. Very occasionally, though, the key fob can lose its connection and needs programming to resynchronise with the car again. And this is how it’s done:
(Before you start, depending on which model BMW you own, it’s possible that you’ll need to repeat the first step a further three times)
- Turn the ignition to position 1 and then turn it back off within five seconds
- Remove the key from the ignition swich
- Press and hold the “Unlock” button
- Press the “Key lock” button three times within five seconds
- Release both buttons
If the reprogramming has been successful the car doors will lock and unlock again.
All remotes will need programming at the same time, otherwise they’ll stop working until they have been reprogrammed.
OPENING A LOCKED BMW
If you’ve locked your keys inside your car, first off rest assured you’re not the only person in the world who’s done that. Next, give us a call and we’ll send an expert BMW locksmith who’ll open up your vehicle and get your keys for you – all without leaving a trace of being there.
BMW KEY REPAIR
If your BMW key has snapped, cracked, or the remote stopped operating, you may find that we can repair it rather than replace the set. If you have broken your BMW key and needs fixing, our dedicated BMW locksmith technicians can recondition it on-site. We repair BMW remote keys when the accumulator is faulty, remote buttons not operating central locking, or casing is worn out. Remote repair service is saving you the cost of a new BMW key.
DOOR LOCK REPAIR/IGNITION BARREL REPAIR
Problems with your BMW door lock, or with its ignition barrel? There’s no need to replace either, since our mobile BMW technicians have the experience and equipment to carry out repairs on both at your home or office … and even if you’re stranded by the roadside.
TIP: It’s always best to unlock your doors using the remote central locking function rather than the physical key, because over time using the key on a regular basis will cause the door barrel to fail. The key should really only be used in emergencies.

MOST COMMON BMW KEYS
BMW KEYS FROM 2009 ONWARDS
Several steps need to be followed when it comes to the replacement procedure for your Audi car keys.
- Find what you can do to keep your BMW protected and how you can improve the security and stay ahead of theft risk on our theft protection page or call us.
- If your remote key can no longer operate the central locking or you see “Key not detected”, you should be able to start your engine by holding the remote key next to the steering column.
- The antenna there will read the immobiliser transponder in the key, and enable the vehicle to start.
- If the remote key button won’t open your BMW, you’ll still be able to open your car using the emergency blade concealed in the remote.
- Unlike some other BMW keys, replacing the battery in this type is usually a DIY job – but if you need any assistance, we’re always here to help.
Warning! The boot opening remote function will unlock the boot … BUT only for a maximum of sixty seconds – after which it will lock again. We’ve been called to carparks where BMW owners have left their keys in the boot, closed it and then of course couldn’t open it again. So be careful when you’re just opening up the boot, but if you do find yourself in this kind of situation, just give us a call.
HOW TO GET A REPLACEMENT BMW CAR KEY
It’s so simple: just give us a call and one of our mobile technicians will be with you within an hour, wherever you may be in London and the Home Counties.
He’ll carry out any work on your vehicle to the highest possible standard, and if it needs to be opened he’ll do that without causing any damage to the lock.
Post-1995 BMWs are fitted with an electronic immobiliser which may well need to be removed from the vehicle to obtain data from it in order to cut a new blade and program a new key.
Whatever kind of BMW key issue you may have, and where you may have it, call us with your vehicle details and where you’re located and we’ll work out an accurate quote for you.
And if you want to find out more about our BMW key replacement service, or talk to a specialist about a replacement for your broken or missing car key, call us today.
